Everything you need to know about the Motor Insurance Database
The Motor Traders Insurance Database, or MID as it is sometimes shortened to, is an online database that contains the information of every car that is insured to be driven on the road in the United Kingdom. As a motor trader, taxi driver, or courier, it is necessary that your vehicles are listed in this database, and that the information is kept up-to-date – this is a key part of the insurance process for motor vehicles. So, let’s look at how the MID works, and what you need to do to ensure that your vehicles are listed in it.
What is the Motor Insurance Database?
The MID is a list of all the cars in the UK that have been declared roadworthy by the DVLA. This essentially means that your car is insured and that it has not been declared as “off the road” by the DVLA. As a motor trader, and as a private citizen, the details of your insured vehicles should be in this database.
How can you make sure that your business is in it?
After you take out your insurance policy, you then have 14 days to update the database. This is the case for all types of motor traders insurance, including motor trade insurance, taxi insurance, and courier insurance. You must add any vehicle to it which is in your possession for more than 14 days. To do this, you will need the vehicle registration number and the details of your insurance policy and provider. You can update the MID either online, or by talking to your insurance provider.
