How HGV drivers should deal with a collision

As a professional driver, people will often look to you after an incident to know what to do so it is important that you know how to handle such a situation with confidence. Even the most careful of drivers can have an accident, which is why you have HGV insurance. You may well be the first to arrive at an accident or may be involved in one yourself, so here we explore the steps you should take as an HGV driver when there is a collision on the road.

If you are involved

If you are involved in the collision then you must first check that you yourself are safe. Once you have done this you will then need to follow some steps for your HGV insurance claim. You will need to exchange details with the other party and should ensure that you have their name, the name of the owner of the vehicle, the vehicle’s registration number and any other contact details you can get. You will need to inform your HGV insurance broker of the full details of the accident for the claim, so you should record the details of the accident as soon as possible.

Make the area safe

The first important step is to ensure that no other injuries are going to occur as a result of the accident. You must warn other drivers of the danger by turning your hazard lights on and ensure that no one tries to cross a road to give assistance unless it is safe to do so. Engines of vehicles nearby should all be turned off and any cigarettes should be extinguished to prevent any ignition from occurring too.

Leave them where they are

Unless there is further danger and risk to life, you should never move a person who has been injured. Collisions can cause injuries to the brain and spine that can be worsened by moving the individual. Waiting for the emergency services to arrive is always your best course of action.

Contact the emergency services

Contacting the emergency services is vital and should be done as soon as you are safe to do so. Give them exact details of your location to make it easier for them to get to you.
