Connected Cameras Pave the Road for Courier Insurance Savings

Dash cams of forward facing cameras in vans are not a new thing now, they have been in operation quite some time in fact. However, a range of 3G connected cameras are offering even more than their not connected counterpart.

The new connected technology is having a considerable impact on the turn around time of claims according to Intelligent Telematics and Plexus Law. This increased turn around could save the motoring and fleet industry millions year on year.

The study reveals that from 4000 vehicles fitted with the SureCam 3G forward facing device, there was a 50% reduction in claim cost and turnaround time increased by an average speed of 15%. This means the insurers had to pay out less money having been able to correctly identify the fault of the accident quickly and efficiently with less fact finding required.

Sam Footer, Partnerships & Marketing Director at Intelligent Telematics explains “The clear message to commercial fleet operators is that connected vehicle cameras are proven to make insurance claims cheaper and quicker to resolve”. Sam continued to add ” Understanding who was at fault can quickly be established with immediate access to video footage – avoiding costly 50/50, exaggerated and fraudulent claims – while at fault incidents can be identified and processed rapidly, keeping third-party costs to a minimum”.

Evidence provided direct from the collision scene, accompanied by vehicle data is helping insurance claims handlers make faster and more educated decisions as to who was at fault. Claims seeing the biggest fall in cost are rear-end shunts which dropped by 55% in average cost and emerging from junctions which dropped by an average of 43% in average claim cost.

Tim Short who is head of Motor Practice at Plexus Law commented: “When you consider that the reported average cost of motor property damage and personal injury claims last year was almost £3,000 and £10,000 respectively, there are clear benefits to be had from adopting connected vehicle cameras. By taking advantage of first notification of loss (FNOL) and proactive claims management a commercial fleet operator can make dramatic savings, which will go straight to the bottom line of their business.”
