5 easy ways to reduce fuel consumption

1. Service your vehicle

Maintaining your vehicle is one of the most important ways to keep on top of fuel consumption. Simple things, such as monitoring the correct inflation of your tyres and ensuring your wheels are correctly aligned, have a positive impact on fuel economy and consumption.

2. Watch your speed

Recent research has shown that cutting your speed down by just 10 mph will reduce your fuel consumption – if you’re a bit of a “pedal to the metal” kind of driver, it might be something worth considering! Also, revving your car will waste fuel unnecessarily.

3. Avoid traffic when possible

Continuously stopping and starting in traffic negatively affects your fuel economy. Planning ahead is the easiest way to avoid traffic; you can usually check any busy areas or blocked routes by viewing the AA website or listening to your local radio station. The same rule applies if you have to wait somewhere – leaving your car engine on for more than 30 seconds while stationary will increase your fuel consumption, so make sure you switch the engine off if it’s safe to do so.

4. Don’t carry unnecessary weight in your vehicle

Carrying things like unused tow racks on the roof of your car or heavy materials in your boot will increase your fuel consumption significantly – extra weight wastes fuel during acceleration. Removing around 40 kg of weight from your car will increase gas mileage by at least 2%.

The way you accelerate can affect the amount of fuel your car consumes. Accelerating too quickly can put unnecessary force on your motor, whereas accelerating too slowly can limit fuel economy if it limits you to lower gears for longer periods of time. You should try to gently approach 50 mph in around 15 seconds to make the most of the fuel in your car. Your fuel consumption is increased if you take too long or stop and start a lot.
